GrapheneOS vs CalyxOS: Which Should You Choose?

Both GrapheneOS and CalyxOS are de-Googled Android alternatives. Here's how they compare and which one is right for different users.

GrapheneOS vs CalyxOS: The Real Differences

Both GrapheneOS and CalyxOS aim to give you a de-Googled Android experience. But they take fundamentally different approaches, and the choice between them matters.

Security Philosophy

GrapheneOS prioritises hardening above all else. The kernel is modified significantly — hardened_malloc, stronger ASLR, more aggressive CFI. This makes GrapheneOS the most resistant to exploitation of any Android-based OS.

CalyxOS prioritises usability and accessibility. It makes fewer modifications to the underlying Android security model, focusing instead on removing Google services and adding privacy-respecting defaults.

Google Services Approach

GrapheneOS provides an optional sandboxed Google Play implementation. If you install it, Play Services runs with no elevated privileges — it's treated as a regular app.

CalyxOS includes microG by default — an open-source reimplementation of Google Play Services. microG mimics Play Services to improve app compatibility, but it does involve sending some data to Google's servers (for push notifications, for example).

For maximum privacy, GrapheneOS's approach is cleaner — sandboxed Play limits data access more effectively than microG.

Device Support

GrapheneOS supports Pixel 6 and newer only. This focused support allows deeper hardware integration and security guarantees.

CalyxOS supports a wider range of devices including some Motorola and Fairphone devices. If you have non-Pixel hardware, CalyxOS may be your only realistic option.

Ease of Use

CalyxOS is generally considered more user-friendly for beginners. The inclusion of microG means more apps work out of the box without any setup.

GrapheneOS requires slightly more initial setup (configuring sandboxed Play if needed) but is equally easy to use day-to-day once configured.

Update Speed

GrapheneOS consistently ships security patches faster — often within days of Google's release.

CalyxOS ships updates regularly but typically slightly slower than GrapheneOS.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose GrapheneOS if security is your primary concern, you're using a Pixel device, or you want the cleanest possible separation from Google's infrastructure.

Choose CalyxOS if you have non-Pixel hardware, you want a simpler setup experience, or you're introducing someone to privacy phones for the first time.

For most privacy-conscious users with a Pixel device, GrapheneOS is the better choice.
